If you are looking to freshen up your look, lip injections are a great way to restore the plumpness that is often associated with youth. However, fear of the unknown can prevent perfect candidates from undergoing a procedure that will give them the look they want. The best way to feel comfortable about lip injections is to learn the facts so that you know what to expect of the procedure. With the right information, you will realize that there is no reason to be nervous. Here are some of the most common fears associated with lip injections:

1. I'm worried that it will be painful, and I don't like needles.

Why you shouldn't be worried:

No one likes needles, but some people are definitely more tolerant than others. The good news is that as long as you can handle the sight of a needle, you probably won't feel much at all! The procedure begins by applying a numbing agent to your lips. Once the area will be numb a tiny needle is used to inject the filler.  It’s all over in about ten minutes.

After the filler has been injected, your doctor will massage your lips in order to make sure that the filler is evenly dispersed and there aren't any lumps or bumps. While this may be a strange sensation, it doesn't actually hurt.

That being said, you may experience some tenderness and bruising after the procedure. This is normal and temporary.  Ice packs and an antihistamine (such as Benadryl) can help alleviate swelling, while supplementation with Arnica montana will help with bruising.

2. I don’t want to put chemicals into my body.

Why you shouldn't be worried:

While there are many varieties of dermal fillers, those that are comprised of hyaluronic acid are typically used for lip enhancement.  In fact, some hyaluronic acid fillers are designed specifically for the lips!  Because hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in our bodies, these fillers are very well-tolerated, and side effects are rare.  Most fillers also contain lidocaine, a localized pain reliever, which increases patient comfort.

3. I'm worried that my lips won't look natural.

Why you shouldn't be worried:

First and foremost, make sure you are working with a reputable and experienced injector.  Take a look at their previous work, or ask for recommendations from patients who have had a great experience. An experienced injector will be able to create a subtle and natural look while maintaining proper proportion.

Secondly, keep in mind that lip enhancement is achieved using hyaluronic acid fillers.  If you feel that your result is not what you were looking for, hyaluronic acid can be dissolved instantly using a corrective enzyme.

4. I'm worried that my friends, family and co-workers will judge me for getting lip injections.

Why you shouldn't be worried:

Instead of worrying about what other people might say, imagine how great you will look and feel. Whether you have always been self-conscious about your lips, or they have lost some volume over the years, lip injections provide a quick and easy solution that will give your self-esteem a boost.

Undergoing any procedure is bound to trigger some fears. In fact, a little fear is probably a good thing as it will motivate you to do some research and decide if lip injections are the right choice for you.
