A radiant, even skin complexion looks great on everyone. Clear and healthy skin reflects light, creating a luminous glow that attracts the eye. Skin that has lost its radiance appears uneven, and may contribute to an aged appearance. Uneven skin tone is defined as areas of pigment on the skin that differ from your natural skin colour. This pigmentation may occur in the form of redness, brown spots, freckles, acne marks, or melasma.

The most significant cause of uneven skin tone is sun exposure. In order to protect itself from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, the skin produces extra melanin. Unfortunately, this excess melanin is what triggers the formation of visible brown spots. The inflammation caused by repeated sun exposure will also cause redness in the skin, particularly in those who are sensitive.
Certain skin conditions will also contribute to uneven skin tone. Rosacea, for example, causes areas of redness on the nose and cheeks. Melasma is a pigmentation disorder that is triggered by the sun and hormonal changes, causing patches of brown pigment on the face. Acne breakouts can leave stubborn red or brown marks, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
