What It Is

As we move through life, we are constantly exposed to factors that contribute to our skin’s degradation. Between harsh cleansers, the sun, and pollution, there are a lot of causes that can lead to premature ageing and overall skin damage. Luckily for you, there are options out there that can help, such as BBL™ treatments at APT Medical Aesthetics!

BBL™ BroadBand Light is also commonly referred to as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or "Photofacial". It is a non-invasive light-based treatment that is extremely effective for improving the following skin concerns:

  • Brown spots/sun damage
  • Rosacea/facial redness
  • Freckles
  • Broken facial capillaries
  • Nose veins

This treatment will restore your skin back to its natural beauty, effectively reducing the appearance of any damage your skin might have suffered in order to give you a more refreshed, youthful complexion.

Treatment Areas

BBL™ may be performed on virtually any part of the body with uneven pigmentation or sun damage. The most common areas treated are typically the ones that experience the most exposure to the sun which includes the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and hands.

How to Prepare

There are a few instructions you must follow prior to your BBL™ treatment. This includes avoiding sun tanning for a least a month before your procedure. Additionally, you will need to avoid taking medications that contain aspirin or anti-inflammatories for a week before and after.

How It Works

A BBL™ treatment uses innovative technology to deliver pulses of light into the skin to gently heat the outermost layers. This heat targets unwanted brown or red pigment, which then absorbs the light energy, effectively stimulating the regeneration of collagen. New collagen production and the creation of new skin cells is what will give your skin a more youthful appearance by making it more vibrant and smoother.

In addition to heat, photothermal therapy is used to target and eliminate the fine vessels that cause facial redness as well as broken capillaries.

The sensation of the light pulses can be compared to the feeling of a rubber band snapping against your skin. Most patients find it completely tolerable, although numbing creams are available upon request.

Results You Can Expect

During your initial consultation, you and your medical aesthetician will discuss your personal goals with the BBL™ treatment and develop a customized plan in order to achieve them. It is possible that your aesthetician may also recommend that you combine BBL™ with another cosmetic treatment in order to maximize your results, such as the HALO laser.

Ultimately, the end effect of a BBL™ treatment will result in a more even, radiant complexion. Signs of sun damage, pigmentation, and facial redness will noticeably fade after your treatments. How many treatments you will need in order to achieve your desired results will vary from patient to patient. Typically, this ranges from 3 to 5 treatments spaced one month apart.

Aftercare and Recovery

BBL™ is a non-invasive no-downtime treatment, which means that you will most likely be able to return to work, resume most of your daily activities, and even apply makeup immediately following your procedure.

Immediately following your procedure, you may experience some slight redness or swelling. This is completely normal and you can expect it to resolve itself within a couple of hours. If you have prominent pigmentation, you may notice that these spots will become darker as well. This is a temporary side effect and the spots will peel off on their own within 2 weeks of the treatment.

You will be more sensitive to UV light after your BBL™ treatment, which is why you should avoid prolonged direct sun exposure until you are fully healed. It is highly recommended that you avoid any form of tanning (tanning beds included) for at least one month and make sure that you are wearing sunscreen on a daily basis.

Not following your aftercare instructions exactly may result in adverse reactions to the procedure and permanent irreversible damage.

Potential Complications

Serious complications relating to the BBL™ treatment are relatively rare, however, there are a few potential side effects that you may experience. This list includes, but is not limited to:

  • Swelling
  • Blistering
  • Scabbing
  • Bruising
  • Scarring
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Hypopigmentation

Any potential complications or side effects will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation with your medical aesthetician, including whether or not you are a good candidate for this treatment. It is our goal to ensure that you are fully aware of all that the BBL™ treatment entails so that you can make an informed decision about what skincare procedures are right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BBL™ Broadband Light?

BBL™ is an innovative technology in which light energy directs heat into the upper layers of the skin. The heat is then absorbed by areas of unwanted pigment, restoring skin to its natural beauty and blending its natural colours, while making it smoother, vibrant, and younger looking.

What conditions can be treated with BBL™?

  • Brown spots (sun damage, age spots, freckles)
  • Vascular lesions (small capillaries, cherry hemangiomas)
  • Acne (see Forever Clear BBL™)
  • Unwanted hair

What areas can be treated?

Any area of the body can be treated.  The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight: face, neck, chest, back of the hands, and shoulders.

How many BBL™ treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required will vary from patient to patient and will also depend on the level of improvement you desire. Maximum results are typically seen with a series of 3-5 treatments, spaced one month apart.

What will happen during the procedure?

Your procedure may take a few minutes to half an hour depending on the area to be treated. Your eyes will be covered with protective goggles, and you may feel a brief warm sensation or “rubber band snap” as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas.

What should I expect after BBL™ treatment?

You may experience some redness or swelling that should resolve within a few hours. For some pigmented spots, you will see a darkening of the treated areas, followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. Vascular lesions may fade or disappear. Your clinician will reassess your skin in one month and determine if another treatment is necessary.

How long will it take to recover after BBL™ treatment?

BBL™ is a noninvasive procedure with virtually no downtime. In most cases you will be able to return to work, apply makeup, and resume most of your activities immediately.
