What Is It?

IPL( Intense Pulse Light) or BBL (Broadband light) is an innovative light treatment that effectively penetrates the epidermis and targets and breaks down the cells that produce melanin in the skin. IPL/BBL Oakville is a versatile treatment that has been found particularly beneficial in addressing a wide range of skin concerns, including:

  • Inborn hyperpigmentation issues, such as freckles and birthmarks
  • Skin discoloration due to ageing and sun damage
  • Rosacea, a skin condition that causes redness and makes blood vessels visible
  • Varicose veins, which are twisted veins that appear swollen or protruding from the skin

In addition, our IPL/BBL Photo Facial Oakville is also an excellent strategy to remove unwanted hair in different parts of the body permanently.

Generally, IPL/BBL is safe for everyone, except for those with darker complexions and who have melasma. Because of its mechanism of action that selects skin pigmentation, exposure to its light rays may result in uneven skin discoloration as a side effect.

Treatment Areas

Although frequently used as a facial treatment, IPL or BBL also produces excellent results when used in the neck, chest, hands, shoulders, legs, underarms, or bikini area.

How to Prepare

Here at APT Medical Aesthetics, we carefully evaluate our patient’s overall health and skin condition before proceeding to administer any of our skin treatments. The same goes for our IPL/BBL Photo Facial Oakville treatment. During the initial consultation, our clinician will conduct an assessment and provide you with recommendations on how to prepare for BBL properly.

You will be asked to avoid getting direct sun exposure or skip your trips to tanning salons for at least a week before your BBL Oakville appointment with us. Some cosmetic treatments, such as chemical peels, waxing, or collagen injections, may not be compatible with BBL. Your clinician will ask you about this and may suggest postponing these treatments if you haven’t already started them.

If you are taking supplements or prescription drugs that contain ingredients that increase your risk for bleeding (including aspirin and ibuprofen), your clinician may advise you to stop taking them if at all possible. If not, he may recommend an alternative treatment. The application of skincare products and make-up that have vitamin A or glycolic acid may also be stopped for a period prior to treatment.

How It Works

Here’s what to expect during your IPL/BBL Oakville appointment. Our clinician will begin by cleansing the treatment area as part of our standard operating procedure. A cooling gel will be applied to increase the absorption of the lightwaves and to make it more effective. You may be asked to wear protective glasses to shield your eyes from the laser light. The treatment site will be repetitively exposed to the laser treatment for about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your case.

Results You Can Expect

The skin in the treatment will have some redness, swelling, or warm to the touch. Don’t worry. These post-treatment effects will resolve on their own after a couple of hours. The results of IPL/BBL are gradual and subtle. It also varies depending on the skin issue you are addressing as well.

If you are having BBL Oakville treatment for sun damage or to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, there will be some noticeable improvements after a few days. Your skin may appear brighter, clearer, and more refreshed. However, your clinician may recommend a series of treatments to achieve the best possible results.

Aftercare and Recovery

The beauty of our IPL Photo Facial Oakville treatment is that there is no significant downtime. You do not need to take an extended vacation from work or your active social life. We have seen patients who have returned to their regular day to day activities a few hours after they received treatment. You are also free to put on make-up the next day.

Nevertheless, there are aftercare measures that should be strictly followed. Like all laser treatments, going on IPL/BBL also makes your skin more sensitive to the sun and UV light. You must avoid any form of direct sun exposure and tanning beds. Wearing sunscreen with a high sun protection factor or SPF will not only shield your skin from the harsh sunlight but also extend the benefits of IPL/BBL.

Potential Complications

As previously mentioned, IPL/BBL is primarily a safe skin treatment with lots of amazing benefits. Nevertheless, certain individuals may not be ideal candidates for it, like those with melasma and darker skin colour. Sun exposure can potentially lead to unpleasant side effects, such as permanent skin discolouration.

As with any medical procedures, there are some reports of inflammation, bruising, blistering, and infection, which can occur. This is why we always recommend only seeking treatment from reputable skincare clinics with licensed practitioners who will always prioritize your safety and well-being.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We are proud to offer BBL™ Broadband Light for IPL photorejuvenation. BBL™ is an innovative technology in which light energy directs heat into the upper layers of the skin. The heat is then absorbed by areas of unwanted pigment, restoring skin to its natural beauty and blending its natural colours, while making it smoother, vibrant, and younger looking.

Brown spots (sun damage, age spots, freckles) Vascular lesions (small capillaries, cherry hemangiomas) Acne (see Forever Clear BBL™ Unwanted hair

Any area of the body can be treated. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight: face, neck, chest, back of the hands, and shoulders.

The number of treatments required will vary from patient to patient and will also depend on the level of improvement you desire. Maximum results are typically seen with a series of 3-5 treatments, spaced one month apart.

Your procedure may take a few minutes to half an hour depending on the area to be treated. Your eyes will be covered with protective goggles, and you may feel a brief warm sensation or “rubber band snap” as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas.

You may experience some redness or swelling that should resolve within a few hours. For some pigmented spots, you will see a darkening of the treated areas, followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. Vascular lesions may fade or disappear. Your clinician will reassess your skin in one month and determine if another treatment is necessary.

BBL is a non-invasive procedure with virtually no downtime. In most cases you will be able to return to work, apply makeup, and resume most of your activities immediately.
