A clinical peel is an exfoliating treatment that refreshes the skin, restores luminosity, and stimulates skin renewal. Clinical peels generally deliver more visible and corrective results than traditional facials. Commonly referred to as “chemical peels”, there is often a negative misconception about how these treatments actually work. In fact, clinical peels are the simplest and most cost-effective form of skin resurfacing, delivering visible results with minimal or no downtime.  The newest generation of medical-grade peels are safe, suitable for most skin types, and can address multiple skin concerns at the same time.

What Conditions Will Clinical Peels Improve?

Clinical peels are a suitable option for those with one or more of the following skin concerns:

  • Dull skin

  • Aging skin

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Sun damage/brown spots

  • Uneven skin tone and texture

  • Enlarged Pores

  • Melasma

  • Acne and light acne scarring

How do Clinical Peels Work?

Clinical peels deliver gentle and controlled exfoliation of the superficial layers of the skin using one or more acids (i.e. glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid), or a combination of fruit enzymes. When these outer layers of dead and damaged skin are removed, fresh new skin cells emerge, and collagen synthesis occurs. The result is softer, smoother skin that is more radiant and even-toned.

What is the Treatment Like?

A clinical peel takes approximately 30 minutes, and can be done on the face, neck, décolleté, or hands. The treatment is highly customized based on your skin type, skin concerns, and personal treatment plan. Once the appropriate peel has been selected, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and prepped. The exfoliating solution is lightly applied with a brush, after which you will feel a warm or tingling sensation for several minutes. If necessary, a fan will be used to cool the skin. After a period of time, the peel solution will be neutralized (some peels are self-neutralizing) and post-treatment products will be applied. These may include treatment serums, masks, recovery creams, or sunblock. You will be then be given post-treatment instructions and products to take home with you.

Will There Be Downtime?

Immediately after the peel, your skin will feel fresh and may appear slightly flushed, or it may look like nothing was done at all! It really depends on the type and strength of the peel, as well as your individual skin profile. Approximately 3-5 days after the treatment, you may experience some skin sloughing that may or may not be visible. In some cases, especially in those patients who do regular peels, exfoliation occurs on a cellular level and is not apparent to the naked eye. Generally, the stronger the peel, the more visible sloughing you can expect. Most of the peels we offer at APT are light-to-medium depth, and are formulated to reduce irritation and redness.

How Often Can I do a Clinical Peel?

Clinical peels are very versatile. For example, they can be performed as a stand-alone treatment for those looking to freshen-up their skin before a big event. Or they may be performed monthly for those patients seeking more corrective results.  Clinical peels may also be done to enhance the results of other in-clinic procedures such as injectable treatments and laser treatments. Your medical aesthetician will devise a treatment plan for you based on your skin type and individual goals.
