Dermal fillers can be used in many areas but are primarily utilized in the face and hands.  They do exactly what their name implies - they fill or occupy space.  As we age, the fat compartments in our face deflate and descend although not necessarily in a balanced or predictable fashion.  The fat pads in our mid face, temples and in front of the ears deflate first, leading to loss of fat around the mouth and jawline. The tip of our nose descends and our folds from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds) deepen. In addition, with the natural loss of collagen, our skin loses the ability to bounce back, causing it to sag. We also lose the fat in our hands leading to a frail appearance.

Dermal fillers, whether temporary or longer lasting, all work to recreate volume. Products such as Juvederm, Belotero, Radiesse and Revanesse can all be employed to provide subtle but noticeable changes that unlock our best features.  Dermal fillers can be used in the cheeks, lips, jawline, around the mouth, nose and hands. Consider dermal fillers to be the paintbrush in the creation of a masterpiece!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are dermal fillers made of?

Most of the dermal fillers available in Canada are comprised of hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring sugar found in the body. Hyaluronic acid combines with water in the skin to gently restore volume loss, and smooth deep lines or folds. Popular brands of hyaluronic acid fillers include Juvederm®, Restylane, Belotero, and Revanesse.

Radiesse® is another type of dermal filler that is comprised of calcium hydroxyapatite. Bellafill® is comprised of collagen gel and PMMA microspheres

What brand of dermal filler do I need?

Your nurse injector will work with you to devise a treatment plan based on your needs and goals. She will choose the most appropriate product that will give you your optimal outcome.

Where can dermal fillers be used?

Dermal fillers are used to restore volume loss, smooth deep lines or folds, and enhance facial features. Common treatment areas include:

  • Cheeks
  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
  • Marionette lines (beneath the corners of the mouth)
  • Lips
  • Temples
  • Tear troughs
  • Nose
  • Back of the hands
  • Chin and jawline

What can I expect from a dermal filler treatment?

Your procedure will begin with a consultation with our nurse injector who will work with you to devise a treatment plan based on your needs and goals. The treatment involves injecting dermal filler under your skin, which takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes.

What results can I expect from dermal filler treatment?

You will see an instant improvement after dermal filler treatment. Results will continue to improve over the next two weeks as the filler settles and integrates with your own tissue.

Does dermal filler treatment hurt?

Most dermal fillers contain a localized pain reliever, ensuring a comfortable experience for the patient.

Am I going to look “done” after cheek fillers?

Absolutely not. An experienced injector will ensure that your results are natural and in proportion to your features. Dermal filler treatment simply restores the facial volume you once had, and is intended to create a natural appearance - a more refreshed version of yourself!

Will I have “duck lips” after lip filler?

The best lip enhancement results are those you don’t notice. Proportion is incredibly important with any dermal filler treatment, especially in the lips. Deviating from natural proportion will lead to an upper lip that is larger than the lower lip, and hence an obvious and unnatural result. Whether you want to restore the lip volume you once had, or enhance what you already have, an experienced injector will create beautiful and natural lips that suit your individual facial proportions.

Is there recovery time after a dermal filler treatment?

Any injectable treatment may be accompanied by some minor redness, swelling or bruising. These effects are temporary and should not affect your normal activities, however it is good idea to schedule your treatment at least two weeks before any major social engagement. Most patients are able to resume regular activities immediately after the treatment.

How long will my results last?

Results from dermal filler can last 6 to12 months or longer, depending on the product used.
