What It Is

More widely known as the Vampire Facial treatment, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) systems allow the collection of platelets, plasma and fibrin that contain essential growth factors. When administered to areas such as tired-looking eyes, dark circles under the eyes, crepey skin and fine lines, PRP promotes tissue regeneration and collagen stimulation to improve skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles in a completely safe and natural fashion.

Vampire Facial or PRP treatments stimulate your own body to rejuvenate your skin and help you put your best face forward! Over a series of treatments customized to your individual needs, PRP injections transform your skin and improve the luminosity and skin tone to provide a clear, youthful, glowing complexion.

Treatment Areas

As you might have guessed from its name, the Vampire Facial treatment is performed on your face in order to treat a variety of skin concerns while stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. These concerns include:

  • Acne, trauma, or surgical scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Dull skin
  • Thin, crepey skin

How to Prepare

While your aesthetician will be able to provide you with specific instructions on how to prepare for your Vampire Facial treatment, there are some things that you will want to keep in mind. For a couple of weeks prior to your treatment, you will want to avoid unprotected and excessive exposure to the sun or tanning beds.

Additionally, you will want to make sure to stay hydrated and drink a lot of water in the days leading up to your appointment, as well as arrive with a bare face.

How It Works

When it comes to a typical Vampire Facial, there are five main steps. The first one being the collection of a sample of your own blood which is then spun in a centrifuge to remove red blood cells. What is left behind after this process is complete is a platelet-rich plasma that is used throughout the treatment process to generate collagen production.

Next, the microneedling portion of the Vampire Facial treatment begins. While most clients describe this part of the procedure as feeling less painful and more as if there is a light vibration over the top of their skin, you do have the option to have a topical numbing cream applied before it begins.

Overall, the entire Vampire Facial treatment takes only around 45 minutes.

Results You Can Expect

This non-invasive procedure is designed to provide you with overall skin rejuvenation. In order to achieve the best results possible, you may want to consider undergoing multiple Vampire Facial treatments. For the best results, we recommend a series of four to six procedures spaced four to six weeks apart from each other. Following your first treatment, you can expect to see gradual results, with smoother and more refined skin after a couple of months.

In order to maintain the results of your Vampire Facial treatment, you will want to ensure that you have a really good skincare regime in place. Wearing sunscreen on a daily basis—which you should be doing anyway—can also help to maintain your results.

At the end of the day, the results you can expect will depend on your individual skin concerns that you are treating and what your goals with Vampire Facial are.

Aftercare and Recovery

Depending on how aggressive the microneedling portion of your Vampire Facial treatment was will determine how much recovery time you will need. You can expect to experience some redness within the first few days following your procedure. However, these symptoms should subside on their own within a few days to a week.

We recommend that you do not wash your face for at least six hours after your treatment. We also advise that you do not wear any makeup for a few days in order to give your skin the best chance at healing and showing you the radiant results you’re looking for.

All aftercare instructions will be more thoroughly discussed with you during your initial consultation.

Potential Complications

As previously mentioned, you can expect some redness in the days following your procedure. Other potential, less severe side effects include inflammation and swelling, which should resolve on its own as well. More uncommon, but serious complications include the potential for infection and scarring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Vampire Facial?

Popular with celebrities, the “Vampire Facial” is a treatment that combines microneedling with Selphyl® PRP. The procedure offers gentle skin resurfacing along with collagen induction therapy without downtime. It is suitable for all skin types and is indicated for the following skin concerns:

  • Fine lines
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Thin, crepey skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dull skin
  • Scars (including acne, trauma, and surgical scars)
  • Thinning hair
The Vampire Facial is one the safest and most effective non-invasive treatments for overall skin rejuvenation. Over a series of treatments, the Vampire Facial will smooth the skin and improve luminosity, providing a more youthful complexion.

What can I expect during a Vampire Facial?

The entire procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and consists of five steps:

  1. A blood sample is collected from the patient.
  2. The blood sample is spun in a centrifuge so that the red blood cells are removed, leaving behind the plasma (clear liquid portion of the blood). Plasma is rich in platelets which are essential for stimulating healthy collagen production.
  3. A microneedling treatment is performed. This creates controlled micro-injuries to the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.
  4. Immediately after the microneedling treatment, the patient’s plasma is applied topically over the treatment area. This infuses the PRP into the micro-injuries, stimulating the skin’s natural rejuvenation process.
  5. A soothing mask is applied over the treated skin for 15 minutes. The patient is advised not to wash their skin for at least six hours after the treatment has been completed.

What areas can be treated?

The Vampire Facial can essentially be performed on any part of the body where skin rejuvenation is desired. The most common areas are the face, neck, chest, and hairline.

Is there any discomfort during the Vampire Facial?

Not at all. You may feel a small pinch during the blood collection. Most patients describe the sensation of microneedling as a “light vibration” over the skin. If we are treating deep scars, we will apply a topical numbing agent to the skin before starting the procedure.

Will my face be bloody after the Vampire Facial?

Not at all. Advances in microneedling devices have virtually eliminated bleeding during the treatment. Also, the PRP is clear in colour and therefore not noticeable on the skin. Your skin may temporarily be a little pink after the treatment, however most patients appear as though they’ve had nothing done.

Is there any downtime after a Vampire Facial?

The Vampire Facial is a no-downtime treatment, and side effects are extremely rare.  We typically do not recommend visiting a hot tub or sauna the day of your treatment, and will ask you to refrain from applying makeup until the next day. It is extremely important that you avoid deliberate sun exposure for about two weeks after your treatment. Your clinician will also provide you with post-treatment instructions so that you can properly care for your skin at home.

How many Vampire Facials do I need?

Optimal results will occur after a series of 4-6 treatments, spaced approximately 2-4 weeks apart, based on what conditions are being treated.

When will I begin to see results from the Vampire Facial?

Many patients notice an immediate glow after their first treatment. Over the next several months, as collagen remodelling occurs, you will notice smoother skin and more refined pores. Fine lines will be softer, and the skin will be more supple. In order to maintain results, proper skin care and use of daily sunscreen are essential.

How does the Vampire Facial work for thinning hair?

There is some evidence that a series of treatments can help stimulate hair growth in areas where the hair is thinning. It is unlikely that the Vampire Facial can restore hair growth in areas that are already completely bald.

The Vampire Facial combines microneedling with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP).
