Gua Sha: 2021’s Hottest Beauty Trend Explained

New beauty trends roll out almost every season. Some are worth trying while others are pure hype. Chances are, you’ve heard of gua sha. The name alone rings with mystery, especially when talked about by renowned beauty bloggers. But is it really worth a try?

At APT Medical Aesthetics, we are passionate about all things skincare. So in this article, we’ve compiled everything you need to know about 2021’s hottest beauty trend, gua sha.

Let’s begin!

Various tools used for gua sha or gua sha facial

What Is Gua Sha or Gua Sha Massage?

Gua sha or gua sha massage is a Chinese traditional healing method that has been around for more than a thousand years. Though the exact time or place it was conceptualized is unknown, it is said to have been around 700 years before the Ming Dynasty.

Pronounced as “gwashah,” the term comes from the Chinese word for scraping, which gives a fair idea of what is involved in a gua sha massage. This type of massage involves the use of smooth tools, usually made of precious stones, that are S-shaped, fin-shaped, dolphin-shaped, or spoon-shaped. The shape of the tool used depends mainly on what body part it is to be used on. These tools are used to scrape the skin in long downward strokes, sometimes with enough firmness to produce petechiae on the skin.

Gua sha massage is typically done on a person’s back, neck, arms, legs, and buttocks. However, gua sha is also incorporated into what’s known as a gua sha facial.

What Is a Gua Sha Facial?

Gua sha facial is not too different from a gua sha massage, except that it is focused on the face and the technique is fine-tuned for this area of the body. Instead of firm long downward strokes, gua sha facials make use of upward strokes and with a lighter touch. When done right, a gua sha facial will NOT leave any petechiae or bruising on the skin.

The tools for a gua sha facial are also more specific, typically made of jade, rose quartz, or a similar precious stone.

What Are The Benefits of a Gua Sha Massage and Gua Sha Facial?

There are slight differences in the range of benefits offered by gua sha massage and gua sha facial.

Benefits of Gua Sha Massage:

  • Uplifts the skin and moves lymphatic fluids
  • Improves musculoskeletal problems like pains and tightness
  • Alleviates swelling in the body
  • Alleviates tension headaches and migraines
  • Is shown to help with conditions such as liver inflammation due to hepatitis B, Tourette Syndrome, and perimenopausal symptoms

Benefits of Gua Sha Facial:

  • Gives a dewy and glowing complexion due to increased blood circulation and improved lymphatic function
  • Can reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Flushes toxins from the facial area
  • Lifts, sculpts, and tightens the skin of the face and neck
  • Relieves muscular tension in the face and neck
  • Aids in the absorption of phytonutrients in products

Professional Treatments Garner Quicker Results

The gua sha is an excellent self-pampering ritual that you can treat yourself to from the comfort of your home, however, there are certain products and other complementary skin treatments that are only available in medical spas that can get you quicker, more defined results. A couple examples include:

Face Slimming

If your main reason for wanting to try the gua sha is to combat the natural signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, then face slimming is the treatment solution for you. This non-invasive treatment makes use of dermal fillers and neuromodulators to redefine your facial muscles and volume to achieve younger looking skin.

Botox

While more research is needed, some users have reported that the gua sha has helped with migraines. If this is the concern you’re targeting when using the gua sha, then Botox might be the answer to your problems! Studies have shown that Botox can help prevent chronic migraines and is an effective solution for reducing the amount of headaches experienced each month.
