Considering Botox and Dermal Fillers? The Importance of Learning Who Is Behind The Needle

With the recent opening of Shopper’s Drug Mart’s Beauty Clinic offering Botox® and dermal fillers, there’s no denying there is a growing appetite among Canadian women for non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments. While convenient, wrinkle injections being so easily accessible these days highlights the importance of safety and client satisfaction. Selecting a cosmetic injector is not a process that should be taken lightly. Failure to do your homework when choosing where to have your Botox® treatment done can result in an unwanted appearance or worse, complications that are often a result of inexperience, lack of follow up and poor product choices. If a refreshed, natural look is your goal, here are some tips that will help guide you in your search for a reputable, skilled injector.

1. Is your injector a trained expert in aesthetic medicine?
With the growing demand for facial rejuvenation, more and more unqualified injectors have begun to offer non-invasive cosmetic treatments within their offices. In Canada, only licensed, medical professionals such as nurses and doctors have legal authority to administer procedures such as Botox® and dermal filler treatments. Don’t feel shy about asking for qualifications. Questions to consider asking include: How many years have you been injecting? Where were you trained to inject Botox and dermal fillers? How do you stay current with the latest products and injection techniques?

2. Is the environment safe?
Don’t forget that cosmetic procedures such as wrinkle and filler treatments are indeed medical procedures and come with risks as well as the possibility of complications. Aside from assessing the sterility of the injecting environment, it is imperative that your medical history and any medications you may be taking be reviewed by the clinic’s physician (often referred to as their Medical Director) prior to treatment to determine your suitability for cosmetic injections and that you are made fully aware of any potential risks beforehand. If there is no Medical Director on staff, then reconsider your decision. It is equally important to know that the medical professionals on staff, both the doctor and/or your cosmetic injector, are experienced and available at all times to recognize and manage any adverse reactions that can occur.

3. The importance of word of mouth
The importance of word of mouth
In the cosmetic industry, word of mouth is the most influential referral source. Ask your friends who have had cosmetic treatments and look natural who their injector is. What was their experience like? Aesthetic injectors who have a loyal clientele are usually those that have built trust with their patients by offering a thorough assessment, personalized service, consistent follow up and great, natural-looking results. It is important that you feel comfortable with your injector and not feel pressured into treatments that you’re unsure of.

4. Choose skill over price
Cheaper is not better. With so many promotions available online for cosmetic procedures such as Botox®, it’s easy to get caught up in price shopping. Get out of this habit fast. When it comes to cosmetic injections especially, it is not the product you are paying for but rather the skill and experience of the injector. In most cases, it will cost you more to receive injections from a highly-skilled and qualified cosmetic injector than your local Groupon Botox® offer. Avoiding the risks associated with low-cost injection treatments by an unskilled provider is definitely worth this added investment.

Hopefully this has provided you with some insight as to who you should trust with your face.
