How To Choose the Ideal Skin Care Products for Good Results!

The Must-Have Skin Care Ingredient For Younger-Looking Skin

Scanning the ingredient list of your favourite skin care products can be overwhelming and confusing. One wrinkle-busting ingredient you need to get to know is Retinol.  Often referred to as vitamin A, retin-A or retinoid, retinol has become a household name in skin care because of its transformative effects.

  • Improves skin tone and texture
  • Minimizes pore size
  • Treats acne and acne scarring
  • Effective fine lines and wrinkles treatment
  • Sun damage skin treatment that reduces the appearance of skin discolouration

Despite the research available regarding the wonderful benefits of retinol, there remains some hesitation and confusion among people as to how to incorporate retinol into their daily skin care routine. In recent years, many skin care companies have found convenient and innovative ways to incorporate retinol into a variety of their products, making it easier for the consumer to access the magical effects of this anti-aging powerhouse ingredient. Dr. Obagi’s ZO Skin Health line is known to be retinol’s biggest cheerleader and does a fabulous job at ensuring all their skin care products, from their skin brightening creams to their eye creams, contain retinol in some way, shape or form.

How can you introduce retinol into your skin care routine?
Here are some quick facts and tips that are sure to help:

1. What is retinol?

  • Retinol is a derivate of Vitamin A and acts as a “cell communicator”, teaching skin cells to renew themselves regularly and function properly. It stimulates the metabolism of skin cells and increases the production of collagen and elastin. With regular use, the result of all this communication is younger-looking, glowing skin.

2. At what age should I start using retinol?

  • You don’t have to wait until your 40s to start using skin care products that contain retinol. During your 20s and 30s, retinol is a great way to prevent the formation of future lines and wrinkles as it maintains your skin’s production of collagen and elastin.

3. How should I start using retinol?

  • Many anti-aging skin care products that contain retinol come in the form of a serum to be used at night and are oftentimes made available in 2 to 3 different concentrations. Alumier’s Retinol Resurfacing Serum is a perfect example of this. For new users of retinol, it is usually recommended to start with a low to medium dose of retinol and incorporate it gradually into your skin care routine as your skin may experience some irritation with initial use. It is important to remember however that this irritation is perfectly NORMAL as you build up your skin’s tolerance for daily usage.

4. Can I use retinol if I have senstive skin?

  • Just because you have sensitive skin doesn’t mean that you can’t use retinol for skin benefits. Newer generations of retinol skin care use cutting-edge, microencapsulated technology to ensure a gradual time release into the skin overnight and often incorporate other soothing and hydrating ingredients so that retinol can be better tolerated by the skin. The key here is to not overdo it and take the time to train your skin with gradual use at first. Learn to make moisturizer your best friend as this added level of hydration will reduce redness of the skin and help alleviate any irritation.

5. What other skin care products should I use with retinol?

  • Because retinol use can make us more susceptible to the damaging effects of the sun, the most important skin care product to have in your arsenal is a good sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Be sure to use your sunscreen liberally every morning to ensure harmful UV exposure doesn’t cause the signs of aging you’re trying so hard to reverse!
