Dermal Filler Treatment

What It Is

As we age, fat deposits in both our face and hands begin to deflate, which is coupled with the loss of collagen and elastin in your skin. This can cause skin to sag and have an uneven appearance, which can be a source of self-consciousness and concern for many.

Like the name suggests, dermal fillers are a minimally invasive treatment to create and restore volume to your skin that is lost through the aging process, or through improper care. They can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, treat facial volume loss, and act as an anti-aging treatment for hands.

Treatment Areas

Dermal fillers typically treat the following areas that are most impacted by volume loss in the face:

  • Cheeks
  • Smile Lines
  • Temples
  • Lips
  • Jawline
  • Chin
  • Around the mouth

In addition, dermal fillers can be used as an anti-aging treatment for hands, which are often the first place we notice aging. Dermal filler treatments typically offered are Juvederm, Belotero, Radiesse, Restylane and Revanesse. Most fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, with the exception of Radiesse, which is made of a calcium suspension. Because it uses calcium rather than hyaluronic acid, Radiesse also helps stimulate natural collagen production for longer-lasting results, as compared to a hyaluronic acid filler alone.

How to Prepare

Before your treatments begin, you will meet with a nurse injector who will devise a treatment plan based on your unique needs and concerns. They will also determine the best filler brand for your skin, that will help you reach your individual goals, as no filler is one-size-fits-all.

Leading up to your treatment, it is recommended to do the following to ensure you are well prepared and to avoid any potential complications:

  • Schedule at least 2 weeks before a major social event to allow for any swelling/bruising
  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours before your appointment
  • Prep your skin with your regular skincare routine to ensure it is in the best possible condition
  • Use sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays
  • Avoid blood thinners up to a week before treatment to reduce swelling and bruising side effects (including aspirin and ibuprofen)

How It Works

Once your plan has been established, you can begin treatment with dermal fillers. The treatment itself, regardless of the brand used, involves injecting the filler into your skin in sessions of approximately 15 to 30 minutes. It really is that simple! As well, most fillers contain localized pain relief, such as lidocaine, so you won’t be in discomfort during the procedure itself, or immediately afterward.

Results You Can Expect

With all dermal filler treatments, results are immediate after your first treatment. The results will continue to improve over the following 14 days as the filler settles and naturally integrates into your skin. As mentioned above, Radiesse will also stimulate your skin’s collagen production for additional improvements on top of the filler itself.

Depending on the brand of filler used, you may need multiple treatments to maintain your results. For Juvederm, this will typically be in a 6-12 month period for upkeep and optimal results. By comparison, for Radiesse, maintenance treatments are usually only needed every 1-2 years because of its additional features.

Potential Complications

A common concern is with fillers is that you’ll very obviously look like you’ve had work done. Not to worry! An experienced injector like those at APT Medical Aesthetics will ensure that you don’t look like you’ve had fillers, or end up with disproportionate features. The best results are those that look natural, after all!

That said, some swelling, redness, and bruising is possible immediately after the procedure, though this will be temporary. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities right away without issue. There are a few things to keep in mind as you are recovering and enjoying your results!

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after your appointment
  • Avoid exposure to heat and sun where possible
  • Use sun screen to protect your skin when outside
  • Avoid strenuous exercise immediately after your appointment
  • Apply a cold compress to the area as needed to reduce swelling and help with pain

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Most of the dermal fillers available in Canada are comprised of hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring sugar found in the body. Hyaluronic acid combines with water in the skin to gently restore volume loss, and smooth deep lines or folds. Popular brands of hyaluronic acid fillers include Juvederm®, Restylane, Belotero, and Revanesse. Radiesse® is another type of dermal filler that is comprised of calcium hydroxyapatite. Bellafill® is comprised of collagen gel and PMMA microspheres

Your nurse injector will work with you to devise a treatment plan based on your needs and goals. She will choose the most appropriate product that will give you your optimal outcome.

Dermal fillers are used to restore volume loss, smooth deep lines or folds, and enhance facial features. Common treatment areas include: Cheeks Smile lines (nasolabial folds) Marionette lines (beneath the corners of the mouth) Lips Temples Tear troughs Nose Back of the hands Chin and jawline

Your procedure will begin with a consultation with our nurse injector who will work with you to devise a treatment plan based on your needs and goals. The treatment involves injecting dermal filler under your skin, which takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes.

You will see an instant improvement after dermal filler treatment. Results will continue to improve over the next two weeks as the filler settles and integrates with your own tissue.

Most dermal fillers contain a localized pain reliever, ensuring a comfortable experience for the patient.

Absolutely not. An experienced injector will ensure that your results are natural and in proportion to your features. Dermal filler treatment simply restores the facial volume you once had, and is intended to create a natural appearance - a more refreshed version of yourself!

The best lip enhancement results are those you don’t notice. Proportion is incredibly important with any dermal filler treatment, especially in the lips. Deviating from natural proportion will lead to an upper lip that is larger than the lower lip, and hence an obvious and unnatural result. Whether you want to restore the lip volume you once had, or enhance what you already have, an experienced injector will create beautiful and natural lips that suit your individual facial proportions.

Any injectable treatment may be accompanied by some minor redness, swelling or bruising. These effects are temporary and should not affect your normal activities, however it is good idea to schedule your treatment at least two weeks before any major social engagement. Most patients are able to resume regular activities immediately after the treatment.

Results from dermal filler can last 6 to12 months or longer, depending on the product used.
