Tiny broken capillaries (telangiectasia), also referred to as spider veins on the face, generally appear on the cheeks, nose or chin. They are typically a symptom of rosacea, chronic sun exposure, inflammation/sensitivity, high blood pressure, or aging, and may also be hereditary in nature. Broken facial capillaries may affect both women and men, and they tend to become more numerous and prominent over time. They can be bothersome because they are very difficult to camouflage, and are impossible to treat without medical intervention.

Laser therapy is very effective to remove facial veins and overall skin redness. Once vessels have been treated they will not return, although it is possible that new vessels may form over time, particularly if one is prone to them.

Long-term results to remove facial veins are possible as long as the patient can be diligent in protecting their skin and minimizing inflammation. This includes daily use of a chemical-free sunscreen, and controlling those triggers that contribute to skin redness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately, facial veins and capillaries will not disappear on their own. In fact, you will likely see more veins appear as time goes on. Laser treatment is your best option for eliminating them completely, otherwise you can try camouflaging them with makeup.

Absolutely! BBL™ Broadband Light is highly effective at treating facial veins and capillaries. Once your veins have been treated you will notice that your overall skin tone is more even and radiant. Unfortunately there are no topical creams or lotions that can get rid of facial veins.

This is most likely a cherry hemangioma. The good news is that cherry hemangiomas respond extremely well to BBL™ treatment!

The light energy from BBL™ is absorbed by the hemoglobin (blood pigment) in the vein, causing it to coagulate, after which it is gradually resorbed by the body. As individual vessels are treated, they may disappear, darken, lighten, or appear unchanged, but eventually fade away over time.

Each treatment takes only a few minutes. Your skin will be thoroughly cleaned, and the vessels will be assessed by your technician. With each pulse of light, you may feel a slight snap against the skin. Immediately after the treatment, redness and mild skin swelling are expected, and you will feel a warm or tingling sensation. These effects are temporary, and cool compresses are helpful. In rare occasions, a small bruise may develop where the vessel was treated. Stubborn veins may require an additional treatment in 4-6 weeks.
