What Are Fine Lines and Wrinkles?

Wrinkles and Fine Lines - before
Wrinkles and Fine Lines - After

Fine lines and wrinkles are the most common and most visible signs of aging. The collagen and elastin breakdown in the skin is responsible for the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the facial area. As we age, our bodies are unable to produce enough collagen to replenish what has been lost. As a result, the skin begins to lose its natural elasticity over time. Many individuals feel uncomfortable about showing fine lines, which is why wrinkle treatment regimens are sought out to decrease these signs of aging on the face and neck.

Common Causes of Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Here are some causes of fine line and wrinkles:

  • Aging – As we get older, the skin becomes more fragile and less elastic. There is a decrease in the production of natural oils, therefore drying out the skin and making the face appear more wrinkled. Aging also diminishes fat in the deeper layers of the skin, causing it to appear loose and saggy, enhancing fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light – Ultraviolet radiation speeds up the natural aging process, and is considered the primary cause of fine lines and wrinkles. Constant, unprotected exposure to UV light breaks down the skin’s connective tissue that lies in the dermis. UV rays prompt the development of free radicals within the skin, hence damaging the elastin fibres that contribute to wrinkles and skin cancer.
  • Smoking – Constant nicotine consumption through smoking dramatically accelerates the natural aging process, contributing to the development of fine lines and wrinkles. Smoking also greatly affects collagen production, increasing the appearance of facial lines.
  • Repeated facial expressions – Facial movements, such as squinting, can lead to the early formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Each time a facial muscle is used, grooves are formed beneath the surface of the skin. The natural aging process causes the loss of elasticity in these muscles, hence creating fine lines and wrinkles on the face.

Wrinkle Treatment Options

There are several treatment options for fine lines and wrinkles, depending on the cause and severity of the condition.

The first step would be to schedule a free consultation with us, to find out the underlying cause of fine lines and wrinkles. A thorough skin analysis provided by our trained professionals will determine the ideal wrinkle treatment that suits your specific needs.

This can include, but is not limited to:

How to Treat Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Sunscreen Protection

Sun exposure can worsen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. At APT, we always advise using sunscreen as an effective treatment option. Our range of medical-grade sunscreen products, such as the Colorescience Sunforgettable® Total Protection has an all-mineral skin shield that provides broad-spectrum protection. It is available in different shades to accommodate all skin types and colours, and has an SPF 50 UVB protection.

Botox®

Botulinum Toxin, or more commonly known as Botox®, has proven its efficacy in treating fine lines and wrinkles in a non-invasive, safe manner. Using an ultra-thin applicator, the aesthetic professional will inject Botox® into the affected area. This wrinkle treatment prevents involuntary muscle contractions, avoiding the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox® works as a preferred wrinkle treatment by many medical aesthetics professionals as it properly relaxes muscles in areas where there is significant repeated muscle movement.

Halo™ Laser

Priding itself as the world’s first hybrid fractional laser, this skincare technology combines tunable non-ablative and ablative wavelengths to give a deep dermal rejuvenation and epidermal renewal. It restores the skin’s radiance and gives off a youthful glow. It also decreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands. It is an effective wrinkle treatment that encourages collagen production as it penetrates the innermost layers of the skin.

Results You Can Expect

Depending on the treatment recommended for you, the results will vary. However, all of our treatment options yield positive and encouraging results that promise a total skin rejuvenating experience.

After choosing to undergo a laser treatment, expect to have a clearer and brighter complexion immediately. It will correct your uneven skin tone, remove visible blemishes and eliminate any kind of skin discolouration.

Treatments for fine lines and wrinkles also address:

  • Oily skin;
  • Acne breakouts;
  • Uneven skin tone;
  • Crows feet; and
  • Marionette lines.

How Long Do Treatment Results Last?

The longevity of the results depends on the type of treatment recommended for you. Some patients choose to undergo multiple treatments for fine lines and wrinkles to ensure longer-lasting results for up to 12 months.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

If you see the lines when your face is at rest, they are considered static wrinkles. Although wrinkle treatment is indicated for active wrinkles, you will likely find that the static lines also improve over time. If your lines are particularly deep and bothersome even after wrinkle treatment, then dermal filler treatment may be an option.

Wrinkle treatment simply relaxes the muscles that create wrinkles, and is intended to create a softer and more refreshed appearance. When performed by an experienced injector, results from your wrinkle treatment will look and feel completely natural.

Wrinkle treatment is indicated for the following areas of the face: frown line, forehead lines, and crows feet. If the lines are on other areas of the face, such as the cheeks, there are other options available that are more suitable. These include laser skin resurfacing and microneedling.

Get plenty of rest. Lack of sleep shows on your face. Wear sunglasses on sunny days - excessive squinting can cause crow's feet. Reduce stress. It can lead to frown and forehead lines. The sun is responsible for 90% of visible skin aging. Therefore, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) EVERY DAY, regardless of the weather. It is a good idea to cover exposed areas of your skin when spending extended periods of time in the sun. If you spend a lot of time in your car, a clear sun-protective screen on your window can be helpful. Studies show that wrinkles and other signs of aging are more prominent on the left side of face due to the amount of time we spend driving.

Retinol is a gold-standard ingredient that is clinically proven to improve wrinkles and photodamage. It works by increasing cellular turnover, leading to healthier and younger-looking skin. Retinol can be found in many products, however only medical grade products contain the concentration of retinol necessary to generate impressive results. Of course, daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is absolutely necessary in order to obtain maximum results of any retinol product.
