Achieve clear, radiant skin through the advanced technology of BBL™ BroadBand Light

As we journey through life, we are faced with a myriad of elements that hasten the aging process. From the impact of harsh products to the relentless effects of the sun, pollution, and even smoking, changes to our skin are unavoidable.

Eliminate brown spots, diminish redness, and unveil radiant skin—all without downtime. Experience BroadBand Light treatment at APT Medical Aesthetics, a leading skincare clinic in Ontario.

What is BBL™ BroadBand Light Therapy?

BBL™ stands for BroadBand Light. It is not a laser. Rather, it is an advanced intense pulsed light (IPL) system manufactured by Sciton that uses powerful light energy for non-invasive skin rejuvenation. It is particularly effective at treating the following conditions:

BBL™ is the world’s most sophisticated IPL device. Its ability to target both pigmented and vascular lesions in a variety of skin types makes it a comprehensive solution for skin rejuvenation, giving patients a clearer, more refreshed complexion.

How BBL Treatment Works

BBL™ face treatment is powered by controlled pulses of broad-spectrum high-intensity light. These target chromophores in the skin—specifically melanin (responsible for brown pigment) and hemoglobin (found in blood vessels, and responsible for redness). Through selective photothermolysis, these chromophores absorb the light energy while the surrounding tissues remain unaffected.

When melanin absorbs this light energy, the unwanted pigmented lesions break down and are eventually eliminated. When hemoglobin absorbs light, the blood vessels coagulate and are gradually absorbed by the body. The overall result is clearer, brighter skin.

BBL™ also plays a role in skin rejuvenation by stimulating the production of collagen—a protein that contributes to firmness and elasticity. This leads to gradual improvement in skin texture and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

What sets BBL™ apart from other IPL systems is its precision and versatility. The wavelengths can be precisely calibrated, so that the practitioner can tailor the treatment to the specific needs of each patient, considering factors such as skin type, target density, and desired outcomes. This level of customization makes BBL™ light therapy a suitable option for a wide range of patient skin types.

BBL™ BroadBand Light Treatment Areas

The versatility of BBL™ makes it an excellent choice for addressing sun damage on almost any area of the body. At APT Medical Aesthetics the most common areas treated are:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Hands
  • Shoulders

Most patients require a series of three to five BBL™ sessions scheduled at 4-week intervals to achieve optimal corrective results.

How to Prepare for a BBL™ Treatment

Following these pre-treatment recommendations will ensure you get the most out of BBL™:

1. Consultation

During your initial consultation, our experienced medical aesthetician will complete a thorough skin analysis before developing a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals. It is important to disclose any medications, allergies, skin care products, or medical conditions, as these factors can influence the treatment approach. Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not candidates for BBL™.

2. Avoid Sun Exposure and Certain Skincare Products

Limit sun exposure and tanning beds in the weeks leading up to your BBL™ session. Tanned skin can not be treated with BBL™. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and avoid self-tanners and spray tans. One week prior to your treatment, discontinue skincare products with active ingredients such as retinol, tretinoin, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid. This will reduce the risk of inflammation after your treatment.

3. Follow Professional Advice

Adhere closely to any other specific instructions provided by your practitioner. These may include refraining from other cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels or laser treatments in the weeks preceding your BBL™ skin treatment.

What is BBL™ Treatment Like?

Before the procedure, your skin will be cleansed and a cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area. Your eyes will be covered with metal shields for protection.

During the treatment, your technician will place the BBL™ handpiece onto your skin and deliver multiple pulses of light. With each pulse you will feel a cooling sensation on the skin, followed by a quick snap and a bright flash of light. Most patients describe the sensation as that of a warm rubber band snapping against the skin. It is mildly uncomfortable, but not painful.

The procedure lasts approximately 30-60 minutes depending on the area(s) being treated, making it an ideal lunchtime treatment.

BBL™ Treatment Aftercare and Recovery

BBL™ BroadBand Light is a non-invasive no-downtime procedure, meaning you will likely be able to return to work, resume most of your daily activities, and even apply makeup following your procedure.

Immediately following BBL™, you may experience skin redness, along with a sensation of sunburn which typically resolves within an hour. There may also be some mild swelling that can last a few days post-treatment.

In the 24 hours after BBL™, those with prominent pigmentation will likely notice their brown spots darkening which is expected. Over the next week, these will gradually slough off of the skin, revealing a more even complexion. Redness and vascular lesions will continue to fade over the next four weeks.

You will be more sensitive to UV light after your BBL™ face or body treatment, therefore direct sun exposure should be avoided. You must avoid any form of tanning (tanning beds included) for at least one month and make sure you are applying sunscreen liberally and regularly, even on cloudy days.

Potential Complications of BBL™ BroadBand Light Therapy

Serious complications from BBL™ treatments are relatively rare. However, as with any procedure, there are a few potential side effects you may experience. This list includes, but is not limited to:

  • Temporary redness and swelling
  • Pigment changes (hyperpigmentation/hypopigmentation)
  • Bruising
  • Risk of burns
  • Blistering
  • Scarring

Any potential complications or side effects will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation with your medical aesthetician, including whether or not you are a good candidate for this treatment.

BBL™ BroadBand Light Results You Can Expect

After each BBL™ procedure, patients can expect noticeable results which become cumulative as the treatment series progresses. Results can be very dramatic, particularly in those patients with significant pigmentation or redness.

When paired with medical-grade skincare and daily use of sunscreen, results from BBL™ can be long-lasting. However, maintenance treatments will likely be required due to ongoing sun exposure and the passage of time. To keep your skin looking great we recommend two to three Forever Young BBL™ treatments per year. This BBL™ maintenance protocol will not only maintain your radiant complexion but will also deliver additional anti-aging benefits such as increased collagen production and wrinkle reduction.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

BBL Broadband Light (BBL) is a non-invasive treatment that uses intense pulsed light (IPL) technology to target various skin concerns, including sun damage, age spots, freckles, redness, and uneven skin texture. It can also stimulate collagen production, leading to firmer and smoother skin.

BBL BroadBand Light is generally safe for most skin types, but it is essential to consult with a qualified dermatologist or skincare professional to determine if this treatment is suitable for your specific skin concerns and type. They can assess your skin condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Unlike traditional laser treatments that use a single wavelength of light, BBL utilizes a broad spectrum of wavelengths. This allows for the precise targeting of different skin concerns and offers more versatility in addressing a wide range of skin conditions with minimal downtime.
