Men’s Skincare: Getting Your Man Into the Habit of Caring for His Skin

“I don’t really need skincare. Just a bar of soap is fine.”

“Skincare? It’s for women, not men!”

“Men’s skincare is time-consuming… and I don’t have the time!”

These are the typical answers of most men when asked about their skincare routine. They just don’t seem to care about anything past washing their faces and shaving.

Perhaps it’s because there’s a misconception that skincare is for “beauty” and therefore, only for women. However, taking care of the largest organ of the body is not just for women, it’s for everyone because… we all have skin, don’t we?

Why Men Should Give Their Skin Some TLC

So if your husband, boyfriend, brother, or dad isn’t giving their skin enough attention, here’s how you can convince them why it’s worth it to start investing in their skin’s health:

  • Skin Conditions Don’t Pick Genders

While it’s true that men and women have different skin and women fixate on their skin more than men, it doesn’t mean only women suffer from skin conditions. Men can suffer from skin problems too.

For example, the beard could be a breeding ground for trapped oil and bacteria which can cause acne. And just like women, men can also suffer from stress and immune system activation both of which can affect the skin.

There are also activities that can change the testosterone levels in the body and lead to skin concerns. When neglected, these skin problems can worsen and result in scars that could have been prevented with exfoliation, and… you guessed it! Regular skincare.

  • Men’s Skin Can Also Be Sensitive

Because of testosterone,  men’s skin is 20 to 25% thicker than women which makes them less prone to cystic acne. Lucky, right?

Not exactly. Although their skin is tougher, they also shave—an action that can expose the uppermost layer of the skin. Once exposed, this immature part of the skin is prone to damage from the elements like sunlight, dust, etc.

And since men shave at an average of 20,000 times in a lifetime (or an equivalent of around five months of a man’s life), you can just imagine how much stress their skin has to go through!

With this said, up to 40% of men have shaving-related skin problems including skin sensitivity which a blunt razor or insufficient lubrication can aggravate even more.

  • The Sun Can Damage Everyone’s Skin

Men’s skin has a higher collagen density than women’s. It gives their skin a tighter and firmer appearance and texture.

But without skincare—and that includes sunscreen—the sun will surely cause damage to the skin, no matter how thick it is!

The list of skin problems caused by sun exposure is long. From aesthetic issues like freckles, fine lines and wrinkles, and age spots to serious conditions such as solar elastosis, polymorphous light eruption, and skin cancer.

  • Male Skin Ages More Slowly, But…

Since men have more collagen than women, their skin also ages slower. In fact, a woman’s skin is around 15 years older than a man of the same age!

Although signs of aging appear later on for men, it happens more quickly once they start. And when they do appear, they are also often fully grooved.

The reason why the skin’s age difference between men and women isn’t so apparent is because women take care of their skin more than men. A man’s intrinsically slow aging process can be negated without proper and regular skincare.

  • Men’s Skin is More Oily

Men have more active sebaceous glands and their sebaceous (oil) production is double that of women. Their pores are larger too.

This means their skin is oilier than female skin. As a result, the pH level of a man’s skin is lower which means it’s more prone to impurities and acne.
